The extreme seasonal variations in flow and the presence of rapids and waterfalls in this river have made navigation  extremely difficult for a long time.
Mekong River Cruises, a Lao-German joint venture, launched the first long-distance river cruise of all times on the upper Mekong in 2005. On the "mother of all waters" the ships sail on different routes between Chiang Saen in Thailand in the heart of the Golden Triangle, the royal city of Luang Prabang, the Laotian capital Vientiane and Savannakhet in the south.

Mekong Island Tours started operations in 2009 with cruises in southern Laos from Pakse to the "Four Thousand Islands" region and the spectacular waterfalls near the cambodian border.
